To make life even harder for each device, I’m also going to play some loud dance music on my tv next door in the living room, which has quite a lot of bass. In my bedroom, that’s the drone of air conditioning units and some light traffic in the distance. I’m going to use a basic decibel meter to measure the highest dBA over a few seconds for each device.Īrguably more importantly, I’m going to take mental notes as to which one seems to be best at blocking out the external world through my bedroom window. So I’m going to choose the sound which I think is going to be the most effective at sound masking for each of these devices and then compare those. Two, for example, only have an internal fan (the Snooz and Dohm Uno). Not all of these devices have the same sound options. So what I’ve decided to do is a few basic tests in my bedroom to demonstrate exactly what I mean. However, once you add a Bluetooth speaker, it’s a whole new ball game. There are several different reasons, but one of the main ones that I normally give is that a decent white noise machine should have better speaker quality, louder maximum volume, and better overall sound masking than a normal smartphone speaker. And it’s actually a really good question. The reason I wanted to do this video is that people sometimes ask me why should they buy a white noise machine when they could just use their phone, an app, or even just a speaker that they’ve already got in the house. Hi, I’m Ethan Green from, and in this video I’m going to be testing and comparing the sound masking effectiveness of five different white noise machines, a smartphone, a Bluetooth speaker connected to a smartphone, and a smart speaker. If you watched the video and are looking for the links to buy the devices, you can find them at the end of each section. I’ve also added a few extra notes I thought would be useful. Please note that I’ve edited the transcript a little to make it read better. You can watch my full test in the video above or read the written version below. So the ones I’ve picked are the kind of size you might want to keep on a nightstand or office desk. Obviously, if you use a giant speaker, it will blow a small white noise machine out of the water. There are other factors to consider, which I discuss in my white noise machine guide.įor this article, I wanted to keep it simple and just see which option was the best for blocking out external noise. I decided to focus specifically on their maximum volume and how well they block out sound for me. So I thought I’d make a video in which I compare five white noise machines, a phone app that plays white noise, and two small speakers. I’m regularly asked about this since I do a lot of reviews of white noise machines. I think we can keep touchpad unit set at 10 levels, but maybe look at being able to smaller increments via the App.If you’ve ever wondered if you really need to buy a white noise machine when you could just download a free app on your phone and connect it to a speaker, this video/article are for you. Okay! That is the feedback we like, and I agree that sounds like a good idea. It is expensive but so much better than a desktop fan! It has improved our sleep! We find our sweet spot to be between 2 or 3 so a 2.5 would be awesome. It would be great if you could adjust between those steps in halves or 3rds. Right now it has ten “whole” steps of adjustment. My only suggestion would be to add more variation to the app speed control in order to dial in the sweet spot for volume level. Intuitive, simple to connect and calibrate. The Bluetooth app to control the device is great too. The touch controls on top are simple: on/off, speed. I liken the sound to the sound of a jet flight at 35,000 feet. Snooz’s sound pitch is infinitely tunable from white to brown sound with a twist of the housing. It has an actual mechanical fan inside a housing but way better than a clunky store-bought oscillating fan from the hardware store.
